Unclog Your Drain the Green Way
We do our best to eat organic, never litter, and to clean our house in an environmentally friendly way. But when it comes to a frustrating (and disgusting) clogged drain, our green values sometimes go out the window. (Or maybe we should say “down the drain.”)
It’s easy to reach for the surefire technique of dousing the clog with Drano. But there is a better way. And it won’t poison our waterways or risk infecting our own water supply like those toxic hardware store-bought brands will.
The recipe:
You probably have it right in your own kitchen: baking soda. Funnel about a half a cup of baking soda into the drain, then follow it up with a few cups of boiling water.
Let the baking soda work its magic for a bit. If it doesn’t work, you can add a vinegar “chaser.” Pour about a half a cup of vinegar down the drain and promptly cover the drain tightly.
The chemical reaction that ensues should cause a good strong fizzing that will undo whatever is clogging your drain.
Follow it up with a good flush of boiling water.
Voila!
